I Tried These Fudgy Nutella Brownies and It's Perfect for Beginner Bakers

Baking desserts from scratch is one of my favorite hobbies. As a dessert-lover, Great British Bake Off fan, and former chemistry major (ah, who can forget those pre-med days?), carefully measuring and mixing together ingredients for a delicious science experiment checks off a lot of boxes for me. Washing a bunch of dishes or spending an absurd amount of time on an advanced recipe, however, isn’t as fun for me. As a result, I tend to gravitate toward simple recipes that I can whip up in under an hour and don’t result in a mountain of dishes.

Enter: Sarah Fennel, aka Broma Bakery’s, Instagram Reel highlighting a recipe for Nutella Brownies made using just one bowl. (Side note: Even if you aren’t a baker, Sarah’s videos are endearingly chaotic and include lots of satisfying baking ASMR.)

“I truly don’t know if there’s anything better than these brownies stuffed with an entire jar of Nutella in them,” Sarah says in the Reel. And by that statement alone, I knew I had to try these brownies — immediately. So I headed to my local grocery store, put on my lavender “Brownies” sweatshirt (from a limited Broma Bakery merch run earlier this year), and made some Nutella brownies.

How to Make Fudgy Nutella Brownies

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Prepare an 8×8-inch baking pan by greasing it with nonstick spray, olive oil, or butter and lining it with parchment paper.

Put butter and sugar in a large microwave-safe bowl (I used a glass Pyrex bowl) and microwave for 30 seconds before mixing the butter and sugar together with a whisk. Repeat this process two times. By the end, you should have a glossy mixture. Wait for the mixture to cool slightly, then whisk in the eggs one at a time. Whisk the eggs, butter, and sugar together until the mixture is light and foamy.

Add in vanilla and Nutella to the mixture. Then, add the cocoa powder, flour, and salt. Pour the brownie mixture into your parchment paper-lined baking pan before dropping more Nutella on top of the brownies in tablespoon-sized dollops. Create swirls by dragging a butter knife through the batter.

Bake the brownies in the oven for about 30 minutes. For fudgy brownies, Sarah recommends underbaking them slightly. (Be sure to remember that the type of baking pan you use can affect the outcome of your brownies, so choose wisely.) When the edges are set, if a knife inserted into the middle of the brownies comes out with a little bit of brownie batter on it, it’s done. Wait for the brownies to cool (if you can!), then slice and enjoy.

My Honest Review of Fudgy Nutella Brownies

This low-effort, high-reward recipe is perfect for beginner bakers. It all comes together in just one bowl, takes less than an hour to make, and you end up with delicious homemade brownies that are sure to impress friends and family — if you’re up for sharing them, that is.

I also like that this recipe is made entirely of pantry staples that I always have on hand, so I can whip them up last-minute if I need to. The brownies themselves are fudgy and moist, and the globs of Nutella offer an extra touch of decadence. If I were to make them again, however, I’d add less sugar (as they are quite sweet, particularly when you get a bite of pure Nutella) and mix in some chopped walnuts or hazelnuts for added crunch.
